The Guatemalan Rural Adult and Children’s Education (GRACE) Project designs and delivers health, art, and teacher capacity-building programs for Latina, Maya and Mixteco women, youth, community leaders, and educators in Southwest Florida and in Central America.
In the summer of 2014, the Leyes para la Paz/ Laws for Peace Campaign was introduced in Guatemala to over 300 educators and community leaders, through workshops conducted by Dr. Genelle Grant, GRACE volunteers from the US, and trained Guatemalan facilitators.
In El Petén, lawyers from the Guatemalan President’s Secretary for Women’s Rights and the President’s Secretary for Human Rights attended the GRACE workshops. They are organizing day-long workshops on their own, utilizing the Card as the basis for study and discussion. Gabriela Bravo, the Maya law student sponsored by GRACE, has also organized workshops for community leaders and women in her rural village, to teach them about their rights.
In the photo above, Dr. Genelle Grant introduces the Leyes para la Paz card to Gabriela Bravo, a first year law student who has received a grant from the GRACE project to cover her degree program. Equipped with the cards she returned to her village to do a presentation to local officials who did not know about the laws.
